About

ABOUT BAR EXAM TOOLBOX

We help bar takers pass – with less stress and a plan that fits.

Bar Exam Toolbox was founded in 2012 by Alison Monahan and Lee Burgess after years of teaching bar prep in law schools and tutoring privately. We’ve spent more than a decade building tools, courses, and tutoring around one idea: there’s no single “right” way to prepare. The right plan is the one that fits you.

Meet the founders

Lee and Alison met randomly on Twitter. As it turned out, they lived less than a mile apart in San Francisco and shared a passion for helping bar takers and law students avoid needless stress. The Law School Toolbox and Bar Exam Toolbox followed shortly after.

Lee Burgess

Lee Burgess

Co-Founder · Bar Exam Expert

Lee Burgess is the only child of two attorneys, so she had little choice but to become a lawyer herself. She graduated cum laude from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she was a TA for Contracts and Torts and Managing Editor of the USF Law Review.

After law school, Lee worked at a large law firm – until she received a letter from the California Board of Bar Examiners about becoming a bar exam grader. That letter changed her career. Rather than grade bar exams, Lee realized her real passion was helping students conquer the California bar exam in the first place. She left her law firm job to become a private California bar exam tutor and law school tutor in 2009, and has served as adjunct faculty at several Bay Area law schools.

Lee’s advice has been featured in ABA Student Lawyer, Ms. JD, LexisNexis, Business Insider, and other publications. She also co-hosts the Law School Toolbox and Bar Exam Toolbox with Alison. Lee is convinced there’s no one right way to prepare – we all have different needs, schedules, and learning styles. She founded the Bar Exam Toolbox to help bar takers figure out the approach that fits – for them.

Alison Monahan

Alison Monahan

Co-Founder · Bar Exam Expert

Alison Monahan had a lot of trouble deciding what she wanted to be when she grew up. One day at lunch, she decided to go to law school. Luckily, she was pretty good at it – she graduated from Columbia Law School in 2006 as a Kent Scholar, a Stone Scholar, and a member of the Columbia Law Review, where she was also a Civ Pro TA.

After law school, Alison clerked for a federal District Court judge and worked as a patent litigator at a large San Francisco law firm. She eventually left to start The Girl’s Guide to Law School®, which rapidly became a leading resource for those embarking on a legal career and was named to the ABA Journal’s Blawg 100 four years running. Her advice has appeared in publications including Above the Law, Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis, and Ms. JD.

Alison was a programmer before law school, and she still thinks like one: she builds the tools that make bar prep faster and easier, most recently the ADHD-friendly RAMP bar prep tool. She is always on the lookout for unconventional, efficient ways to study – so you can pass and get on with your life.

“There’s no one right way to prepare for the bar exam. The right plan is the one that fits the bar taker in front of you.”

What we believe about bar prep

The bar isn’t won by knowing more law. It’s won by knowing how to write under pressure on the kinds of questions you’ll actually see – and approaching the multiple-choice with a real strategy.
Different bar takers need different approaches. A first-time taker out of law school, a working attorney, a parent, a repeat taker, a NextGen student – these are not the same situation. Bar prep should adapt.
Most commercial courses are built for one type of student. If you don’t fit that template, the course doesn’t work. We build tools, courses, and tutoring that flex around the person.
Failing the bar isn’t a personal failing. It’s almost always a strategy or approach issue. The fix isn’t to study harder – it’s to study differently.

The Bar Exam Toolbox team

Beyond Lee and Alison, BET has a team of experienced bar exam tutors. Every tutor has passed the bar, has substantial bar tutoring experience, and goes through our internal training. Most have also taught bar prep in law schools or other formal settings.
