How Early to Start Preparing for the Bar Exam, and How?

September 23, 2019 By Tyler Coulson Leave a Comment

How Early to Start Preparing for the Bar Exam, and How?Every law student considers the question of how early to start preparing for the bar exam. If you’re a 1L, should you worry about it? If you’re a 3L, have you waited too long? You can ask four different lawyers this question and get nine different answers. Some will tell you that you should not even think about the bar until you take a bar prep course and some will tell you that you ought to choose your law school electives based around the bar subjects.

But the best answer to this question is probably that you ought to start your bar prep as early as you possibly can by learning how to do legal writing clearly and concisely.

Ego Depletion While Studying for the Bar Exam

June 5, 2019 By Tyler Coulson Leave a Comment

Ego Depletion While Studying for the Bar ExamAt orientation on the first day of law school, I remember an important-looking man standing at the front of the room and telling people that law school was stressful, so maybe it “wasn’t a great time to stop smoking…if you’re a smoker.” That was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the stupidest advice I’ve ever heard. It’s literally always the right time to stop smoking cigarettes. The guy speaking at my orientation had a point, though: He believed that we each have a limited bucket of discipline, and that we ought to spend it wisely.

In my house we call this “will power bandwidth,” but in the world of psychological research this idea is called “ego depletion.” This is a theory that we each have a limited reserve of self-control, and that using that self-control or discipline for one task (say, for example, dieting) will impact our ability to remain disciplined on some other task.

Dealing With Outside Responsibilities While Studying For the Bar

April 8, 2019 By Tyler Coulson Leave a Comment

Dealing With Outside Responsibilities While Studying For the BarStudying for the bar exam sometimes feels like a vortex that swallows up everything. It sometimes feels like the same day over and over, like the movie Groundhog Day, and the only thing that changes is the subject you’re studying. It feels like the outside world has ceased to exist.

Trust me, that ain’t the case. One of the most challenging aspects of studying for the bar exam is that the world keeps right on spinning and your day-to-day obligations will roll right over you if you let them.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with outside responsibilities during the bar exam, but you ought to plan ahead for how to deal with professional and personal obligations before you begin studying for the bar exam.

Why You Should Take Evidence During Law School and Why It’ll Be Important to Your Bar Study

March 25, 2019 By Tyler Coulson Leave a Comment

Why You Should Take Evidence During Law School and Why It’ll Be Important to Your Bar StudyIf you are at a law school that does not require Evidence and if you’re on the fence about whether or not to take an Evidence class, let me set you straight: take it. Start thinking now about when to schedule it, whether or not it’s a required course.

It’s no secret that law school’s standard pedagogical methods don’t translate well to the bar exam or to a law practice, and its emphasis on theory and policy isn’t super helpful on test day. But Evidence is one of the few law school classes that helps you prepare for both the bar exam and for the actual practice of law, whether or not you plan to be a litigator.
