Well, when I was studying for the bar, I definitely found the 4th of July to be a milestone of sorts. The bar exam was no longer “weeks” away; it was, well, “days” away. I was starting to realize that I needed to commit these binders or books of law to memory. This was completely overwhelming—overwhelming almost to the point that I had moments when I was sure I was going to fail. Sound familiar to anyone?

Today we’re excited to have bar exam expert Alfred M. Zappala here to answer some questions about preparing for the bar exam. Beyond writing The Multistate Digest (see my review here), Alfred is an experienced law professor, bar lecturer, bar tutor and coach. He also practices law, focusing on assisting clients with business matters abroad. He splits his time between America and Sicily (in fact, this interview was done while he was in Sicily!).

Studying for the bar exam is among the hardest things you will have to do in your legal career. It is a test of character, to be sure. It is a test also of your endurance and dedication. Until I launched my own business, I had not gone through anything else that was quite so personal, so intensive. And now, upon reflection, I can see that many of the lessons I have learned in building my business are useful in the context of studying for the bar exam.
Law students often wonder: Can you pass the bar exam without taking BARBRI? Short answer: Yes.
I took two bar exams, and passed, without ever doing BARBRI. Crazy, I know!
Well, it’s actually not that crazy.
Lots of people take BARBRI and fail, and plenty of people skip it, and pass.
So let’s talk about what’s really required to pass the bar, however you prepare:
If you’re studying for the bar exam, chances are you are pretty stressed going into the final month of studying. You may have questions on how to keep some sort of balance in these final weeks. Well, we’ve got answers!
