RAMP – MBE-Only

RAMP MBE-ONLY FOR NON-UBE STATES

Learn the rules. Apply them fluently.
Walk in ready.

RAMP is an adaptive bar exam study tool built around how rules actually stick in your brain. Three tiers of scaffolding, spaced repetition, and AI-graded practice across the seven MBE subjects.

For students in California — or in any state that uses the MBE with state-specific essays — RAMP gives you the doctrinal mastery the multiple-choice section demands, without wading through content you don’t need.

Lee Burgess

Hi, I’m Lee Burgess. I’m one of the co-founders of the Bar Exam Toolbox.

If you’re taking the California bar or another non-UBE exam, the MBE half of the test is critical. It rewards rule fluency and accurate application under time pressure. It punishes the “I’ve heard of this rule but can’t really remember it” feeling that most bar students hit somewhere in mid-July.

The hardest part of MBE prep isn’t the format. It’s knowing when you actually know the rules well enough. You’ve done hundreds of practice questions. The rules sound familiar. But familiar isn’t the same as knowing things cold under pressure. That’s the gap RAMP is built to close.

“What if the way most people study for the bar is just wrong?”

Alison and I built RAMP for everyone we’ve worked with over the last 15 years — the people who watched every lecture and still failed, the people studying for the bar a second or third time, the people with ADHD who white-knuckled through law school.

We built it for the way our own brains actually work, too.

From being introduced to a rule to using it confidently.

The MBE tests rule recall and rule application across seven subjects, in detail. There’s no way to bluff your way through. You either know Hearsay exceptions cold or you don’t. You either recognize a Statute of Frauds problem on sight or you don’t.

RAMP builds that fluency systematically — not by re-reading outlines, but by drilling rules with adaptive scaffolding that fades as you master each topic.

Your bar review course explains the law. RAMP makes sure you actually know it.

Scaffolded Quiz Engine

Build fluency with every rule across all seven MBE subjects.

  • Multiple question formats — multiple choice (single and multi-select), fill-in-the-blank, written answers (AI-graded), and matching — each matched to what best tests the rule
  • Three adaptive tiers per topic
  • AI grading with detailed feedback on written and fill-blank answers
  • Two-layer spaced repetition (topic level and question level)
  • Smart Review tells you what to work on each session

Support that fades as you master each topic.

Tier 1 — Learning

Full support

  • Rule card on the screen
  • Full metacognitive prompts
  • Hints available on demand
“Learn to apply the rule.”

Tier 2 — Practicing

Reduced support

  • Rule card collapsed (click to reveal)
  • Hints still on demand
  • Thorough feedback
“Internalize the rule.”

Tier 3 — Mastery

No scaffolding

  • Just you and the fact pattern
  • No rule cards, no hints
  • Bar exam simulation
  • Detailed feedback after
“Know it cold.”

You move up automatically — 80%+ rolling mastery, 5+ consecutive correct. You move back down if performance drops. Tracked per topic, so you might be Tier 3 on Offer, Tier 2 on Consideration, and Tier 1 on Conditions.

No other bar prep tool does this.

By the numbers.

2,323Scaffolded questions
7MBE subjects
43Topics
168Subtopics

The seven MBE subjects.

Every subject, topic, and subtopic covers the doctrines the MBE actually tests.

Civil Procedure
Constitutional Law
Contracts
Criminal Law and Procedure
Evidence
Real Property
Torts

Not included: Business Associations and Family Law. Those aren’t on the MBE. If you need either subject for the NextGen UBE, see our NextGen UBE page; for the legacy UBE, see RAMP Legacy UBE.

You’ll never wonder what to study next.

Tier 1 — rule visible

On Contract Formation, you’re at Tier 1. Read the rule. See an explanation and examples. Get hints and help where you need it.

Tier 3 quiz with no scaffolding
Step 4

Tier 3 — no support

On other topics, you’re at Tier 3. Show you know it. Three wrong answers in a row — system bumps you back to Tier 2. The support is always there for you.

Keep going, switch subjects, or take a break?

Built around how memory and attention actually work.

Most bar prep was designed for someone who can sit still and focus for three hours without a break. That’s not most people.

We built RAMP differently — not as an “accessibility mode” tacked on, but as the core architecture.

Rule cards externalize working memory

Working memory holds about 4 things. A bar question asks you to juggle 5+. At Tier 1, the rule is on screen so your brain can focus on application.

Fact patterns are chunked, no walls of text

Max 3–4 lines per paragraph, visual anchors, white space. Cognitive load theory, applied.

20–25 minute sessions by default

Four 25-minute sessions produce better long-term retention than one 2-hour block. This is one of the most replicated findings in learning science.

Feedback is always immediate

Every answer gets a substantive explanation — not just right or wrong, but why. Delayed feedback is lost feedback.

Metacognitive prompts guide thinking

“Before you answer, ask yourself…” prompts help with the executive function piece many students need to practice.

Spaced repetition that adapts

Intervals expand as you master each topic and contract when performance drops. Not a flashcard timer — purpose-built for legal content.

“If you have accommodations on the bar exam, you should have accommodations in your prep tool. Your bar course wasn’t designed for that. RAMP was.”

Try the entire Criminal Law module — including the Constitutional Protections piece (Fourth, Fifth, Sixth Amendments). Every topic, all three scaffolding tiers, full spaced repetition. Plus 25 AI-graded submissions.

No credit card. Just give it a whirl.

Criminal Law is familiar territory — you covered the basics as a 1L, and the doctrines feel like ground you already know. That’s exactly what makes it a good preview of how RAMP works: you’ll see the scaffolding in action on material you only half-remember, and you’ll find out fast where your knowledge gaps are and start building mastery through spaced repetition. The Criminal Procedure piece — search and seizure, Miranda, right to counsel — is where most students discover their recollection is shakier than they expected.

However you’re studying, RAMP fits.

Using a commercial bar program

Layer RAMP on top. The scaffolded engine drills rule recall in a way most courses don’t — adaptive per-topic, with spaced repetition keeping mastered material warm. Plan an hour or so a day in the lead-up to your exam.

Using a California-specific course

Your CA bar course teaches the breadth of your exam — including the MBE doctrines. Use RAMP on top to make sure those doctrines actually stick. Lecture-and-outline coverage isn’t the same as drilling each rule until you can apply it cleanly.

Studying for the bar again

If doing the same thing didn’t work last time, try something that adapts to your specific weak spots — not the same lectures on stuff you already know.

Working professional / non-traditional

The 20–25 minute session structure is built for fragmented schedules. Stack a few sessions across morning, lunch, and evening; spaced repetition makes the work compound over time.

What RAMP doesn’t do — and where to get it.

RAMP teaches MBE doctrine. It’s adaptive scaffolded learning that builds rule fluency until each doctrine is cold. It is not an MBE practice question bank — it doesn’t give you actual MBE-format timed practice — and it doesn’t cover state-specific essays or performance tests. Those are separate study activities, and most students preparing for an MBE-only state bar (California especially) need some of the following:

MBE-format practice questions

A separate question bank where you sit down and work through MBE-style questions under time pressure. The major options are AdaptiBar and UWorld; the NCBE also publishes released MBE questions. RAMP builds the doctrinal foundation; a practice bank builds the exam-format reps on top of that foundation.

California WOW (Writing of the Week)

A structured weekly essay workshop covering 11 California essays plus 5 PTs. Each week you get an attack-plan video for the subject, a substantive mini-lecture from Lee, a timed pre-writing outline using the included timer, and a self-evaluation against a BET-drafted sample answer. Self-paced and self-evaluated — no tutor feedback included.

California BBB (Brainy Bar Bank)

A searchable bank of real past California bar exam questions, organized by subject, topic, and subtopic, with frequency analysis showing which doctrines actually get tested most. 270+ essays going back to 2002 and 17 California Performance Tests.

California Self-Study Program

A bundled program that combines WOW, POW, the BBB, Smart Bar Prep outlines, and templated or custom study schedules into a packaged self-study option. If you’re going the self-study route and want the BET California ecosystem in one purchase, this is the package.

California bar exam tutoring

One-on-one personalized help. Useful if you want feedback on your essay and PT responses, help on the MBE, and ongoing accountability and personal support.

Questions

No, RAMP is not a full California bar course. Specifically, it does not include:

  • MBE-format timed practice questions (use a separate question bank like AdaptiBar or UWorld)
  • California-specific essay prep
  • California Performance Test instruction

For the pieces RAMP doesn’t cover, Bar Exam Toolbox has several California-specific options: California WOW for structured weekly essay and PT practice, California BBB for real past California essays and PTs, the California Self-Study Program for a bundled package, and California bar exam tutoring for one-on-one help.

Not on its own. RAMP teaches the doctrine — adaptive scaffolded learning across the seven MBE subjects — but it doesn’t include MBE-format practice questions or any state-specific essay/PT prep. Most students use RAMP for the doctrinal foundation and combine it with a separate MBE practice bank (AdaptiBar, UWorld) plus a state-specific resource for the essays and PT. Plan for all three pieces.

Yep. No credit card, just try it out. You get a real account with the full Criminal Law/Criminal Procedure module — all three tiers, spaced repetition, 25 AI-graded submissions. If you upgrade later, great. If not, you still have a useful study tool for one subject.

Those subjects aren’t on the MBE. They appear on the NextGen UBE and on some state essays, but they’re not part of the multiple-choice portion of any current bar exam. If you need Business Associations or Family Law coverage for a NextGen state, see our NextGen UBE page. For a legacy UBE state, see RAMP Legacy UBE.

This is the audience we built it for. The scaffolding system — rule cards, chunked fact patterns, metacognitive prompts, immediate feedback — is built around working memory and executive function research. Configurable study modes are on by default. You don’t have to identify with a diagnosis to use any of it.

Through your bar exam administration plus a buffer — one year from purchase for paid tiers. Free tier: Also one year.
